Background of the Study
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing service delivery across various sectors by automating processes, enhancing decision-making, and providing personalized experiences. In Nigeria, the incorporation of AI into public and private service delivery systems represents a significant shift toward modernizing traditional methods. From healthcare and education to banking and customer service, AI technologies such as machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics are being employed to streamline operations and improve service efficiency (Eze, 2023). This digital transformation is driven by the increasing availability of data, advancements in computational power, and the growing need for innovative solutions in a rapidly changing global economy (Okoro, 2024).
The Nigerian government, along with private sector stakeholders, has recognized the transformative potential of AI. Initiatives to integrate AI into various service sectors have been launched, aiming to enhance transparency, reduce human error, and deliver services in a more timely and efficient manner (Afolabi, 2023). Despite these promising developments, the adoption of AI in Nigeria faces numerous challenges. There are significant gaps in technical expertise, regulatory frameworks, and infrastructure, which impede the seamless integration of AI into everyday service delivery (Ude, 2025). Moreover, ethical and data privacy concerns have emerged as critical issues that must be addressed to gain public trust and ensure that AI applications are implemented responsibly (Chukwu, 2023).
This study seeks to investigate the impact of AI on service delivery in Nigeria, critically examining how AI-driven innovations are reshaping sectors such as healthcare, finance, and public administration. The research will explore both the benefits and limitations of AI integration, including its effects on operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and overall service quality. By analyzing current AI applications and their outcomes, the study aims to provide insights into the key success factors and obstacles that influence the effectiveness of AI in service delivery. The findings will contribute to the ongoing discourse on digital transformation in Nigeria and inform strategies for scaling AI initiatives in a manner that maximizes benefits while mitigating risks (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although AI holds considerable promise for enhancing service delivery in Nigeria, its adoption remains constrained by several interrelated challenges. A significant problem is the limited technical expertise required to develop, implement, and maintain AI systems. Many Nigerian organizations lack adequately trained professionals, which hampers the effective deployment of AI solutions (Oluwaseun, 2023). Additionally, the existing infrastructure is often insufficient to support the high computational demands of advanced AI applications, leading to suboptimal performance and integration issues (Chinwe, 2024).
Another pressing issue is the absence of comprehensive regulatory frameworks that can guide the ethical and secure implementation of AI. Unclear policies regarding data privacy, algorithmic transparency, and accountability have created uncertainty among both service providers and consumers, thereby limiting the widespread acceptance of AI-driven services (Nwachukwu, 2025). Furthermore, the high costs associated with AI technology acquisition and the integration with legacy systems present formidable financial barriers for many organizations, particularly in the public sector (Adeniyi, 2023).
These challenges have resulted in a situation where the theoretical benefits of AI—such as improved efficiency, enhanced service quality, and increased customer satisfaction—are not fully realized in practice. Consequently, there is an urgent need for a detailed investigation into the factors that hinder the effective implementation of AI in service delivery. This study aims to identify these barriers and propose strategic recommendations that can enable Nigerian organizations to overcome them, thereby unlocking the full potential of AI to transform service delivery (Okafor, 2023).
